All you need to know treating puppy colic at home: we explain what is puppy colic, what are the symptoms and which easy treatments turn puppy colic into a healthy playful puppy again.
Puppy colic symptoms
- your puppy cries and screams a lot
- your puppy is bloated and because of that is cramping and in a lot of pain
- your puppy wants to void his bowels (poop) as soon as he finishes eating
- your puppy has diarrhoea or is constipated (I know, that sounds contradictory…)
- your puppy has more than the usual number of ‘poop sessions’ during the day (easy to know what is "more" when you still have a complete puppy litter to compare with)
- your puppy is not playful: looks sad, panicky and cries
- your puppy has seizures (take it to the vet immediately!)
What is puppy colic
Puppy colic means usually that there is too much gas in the puppy’s system. This gas appears because your particular puppy has a problem digesting particular food or the mother is not stimulating the puppy enough to move stools.
Puppy colic happens a lot in big litters because the mother is not stimulating certain puppies. Very young puppies cannot go to the bathroom without some stimulation to their private areas, which should be done by the mother using her tongue.
You can compare puppy colic to baby colic: this gastronomical disorder normally comes as easy as it goes by changing the diet, yet seeing your puppy in pain can be heartbreaking.
Puppy colic treatment
Remember that colic is a puppy disease. When your puppy grows older, his digestion system becomes stronger.
Puppy colic will normally no more appear when a puppy becomes 1 year old. Of course you need to act faster than that!
With very young puppies "you have to imitate the mother’s stimulating tongue behaviour": use a moist warm wash cloth and stimulate the belly and private areas: use a different cloth for both anus and genital area.
Use the following techniques with puppies that are already eating puppy food:
- always make sure your puppy has access to lots of water, and monitor his drinking
- always try to burp your puppy just like you would burp a baby: any gas that escapes with burping will be a relief for your puppy
- help your puppy’s bowel movements: massage his belly and make sure he gets enough walks
- give your puppy different puppy food until your puppy gets better. Experiment to find out which food is good for your puppy and which food causes puppy colic.
- feed your puppy with prescribed puppy food for dogs with weak stomachs. This is basically food that’s easier to digest. Ask your vet which food to recommend. Hill’s I/D food has worked for one of our puppies in the past. First change the diet to a complete I/D menu. Then slowly introduce other food and find out what causes problems and what not.
- if your new food doesn’t help, change again to other food! What works for one puppy doesn’t have to work for another…
- feed your puppy smaller portions over more regular intervals during the day
- when nothing helps: try feeding your puppy plain yogurt
- make sure your puppy feels safe and sound with you. Don’t be upset that there is puppy poop all over the place suddenly. Be aware that your puppy just after eating wants to go to the toilet.
Make sure you adjust your potty training times to ‘the new colic’ habit: train your puppy on the litter box or take him out for a walk or let him outdoors… right after your puppy has eaten!
Remember your puppy can’t help it either, it has to do with what you are feeding him and how he reacts to it…
- stay away from painkillers as much as possible: painkillers cause constipation
- if the problem continues: go and see your vet (they could give "gas drops": a medicine to expel gas easier)
Experimenting with a new diet and having your puppy aging daily, you should be able to rid your dog from puppy colic.

Rottweiler puppies in Indiana

My auntie in Indiana asked me where she can find free or paid Rottweiler puppies in Indiana.
I did some Google-ing and found a "Rottweiler puppies in Indiana listing" with … 1 puppy for sale at $1800 and according to the listing he or she is 57 weeks old….
That’s quite far off when it comes to free puppies… So you need to be a bit realistic: if you want something free, you get what you paid for… most likely not German Import Rottweilers, but it would be nice that somebody proved me wrong in a comment!
What’s nice about the site mentioned above is that they also list:
But if your choice is only a 57 weeks old puppy… That shows exactly why there is a need in putting breeders and owners together. I will need to look for more addresses and post them here if I find any. Help us out if you can!

NC animal shelters are "flooded’ with puppies and kittens as April is the peak breeding season for cats and dogs.
The most popular of the North Carolina animal shelters: Guilford County Animal Shelter has taken in more than 50 kittens in just the past two weeks alone and a bunch of cute little puppies.
Most of their owners are pet lovers, but there dogs and cats have new pups or kittens that the owners cannot take care for anymore.
If you are one of these owners, please leave a comment and give your puppy up for adoption!
Guilford County animal shelter
The enormous amount of new puppies and kittens is putting a real strain on the resources of the Guilford County animal shelter. You can help them out by:
- adopting a puppy for free
- becoming a foster home for those kittens and puppies that are still too young to be put up for adoption or vaccines
- donating a few dollars or pet supplies like:
- canned kitten food,
- canned puppy food,
- dry puppy food
- dry kitten food
- towels, blankets, treats.
In return the Guilford County Animal Shelter is holding a low-cost rabies clinic Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with vaccines for only $5.

If you ask yourself when is a puppy full grown, are you asking about his size or his mental state of mind? When is the best time to start puppy training? Like with human children: there is a difference between the age their growth stops and the age you feel you are dealing with an adult. Same goes for puppies!
When is a puppy full grown in size?
Dogs will reach their mature size between 1 and 1 and a half years. Larger dogs can still take a bit longer. And like with humans: sometimes the body is a bit out of proportion as some parts of the body grow slower than others.
When is a puppy fully matured?
When it comes to adult dog behavior: the rule of thumb is about 1 year.
Add an extra year when you are raising a border collie. My border collie bit me when he was more than 1 year old during an entire day long training session, although he never bit me again ever. Although the dog looks fully grown, he doesn’t behave fully matured yet (it’s kind of a puppy in a dogs body… and border collies just keep on being playful forever I find).

Add again another extra year for Catahoula dogs to reach maturity: 3 years all in all.
When does a puppy shows signs of maturity
Your puppy starts his dog life when he stops demanding overly attention and reduces his favorite playtime like destroying your shoes, eating your newspaper before you can read it…
In other words: when you notice you can let your puppy more time alone without finding your house or garden "being struck like with a hurricane", he is surely reaching maturity.
Some dogs keep playful forever (like border collies), but compare it with a football game: little kids just kick the ball, grown ups "play by the rules"… Same goes for puppies versus grown up dogs.
Of course it’s always wise to take your puppy to a dog training school from an early age, but make sure you give your puppy time and space to play!
